Next in the Meet the Cloud Crowd series, we interview George Godman, who reveals why he finds it so rewarding coming up with different strategies to help brands optimise their conversion rates and generate more revenue.
What attracted you to Cloud IQ?
After my A levels I started looking for a career in the technology space. I thought it would suit me as it’s such a fast paced industry, full of opportunities.
What attracted me to Cloud IQ straight off the bat were the people I met. They were a tight-knit team and I wanted to be part of that. Part of the reason why I’m still here today is because Cloud IQ has managed to keep that friendly ‘togetherness’ despite growing so rapidly, something not many startups manage to do. It’s amazing to think that when I started back in 2016 there were only 25 people working here and just two years later, there’s over 100. I’ve really enjoyed being a part of this change. It’s been exciting, particularly the move from our old office in Hackney College to RocketSpace, a tech accelerator that’s been home to the likes of Spotify and Uber. I’m so grateful that I have the opportunity to work in such a cool office space.
Another thing that attracted me to Cloud IQ was their product. Cloud IQ have a vision for the future to make effortless optimisation accessible to all, and doing this means they’re constantly innovating and investing in the product to ensure it continues to be the best in the market. I also liked the fact they were a small but growing team, as I saw there would be a greater opportunity for me to learn, take on more responsibility and grow with Cloud IQ.
Tell us about your role?
I started my Cloud IQ career straight out of college back in 2016 as an Inside Sales Executive. I learnt sales from scratch, sourcing potential customers, generating leads and booking meetings for the Business Development team.
18 months later a position opened up within the Business Development team and I was given the opportunity to apply for it. I was promoted to Business Development Executive and now I get to follow the customer journey all the way through from sourcing the client through to seeing them onboard and reap the benefits of our products, which I find really rewarding.
Cloud IQ’s range of products means I have to think strategically about which products will work best for each client, depending on their different challenges and goals, and propose the best solution for the client. I enjoy the variety of the job and getting to interact with different companies each day. Seeing the difference our solution actually makes to clients, and the results they achieve with us is the thing I love most about what I do. No one client I speak to is the same and that’s what keeps the job interesting.
What advice would you give to someone who wants to work in your role?
When speaking to prospective clients, I think it’s important to create a balance between listening to the client and proactively asking open questions. That way we maximise the knowledge gained from the conversation, and can use that information to tackle the challenges faced by the organisation and help them succeed. Of course you also have to know the product like the back of your hand, and never forget that practise makes perfect!
What’s the best thing about working at Cloud IQ?
The people and the culture are by far my favourite part of working at Cloud IQ. I’ve been here for 2 years and I enjoy coming into work every day because of the team. The direction the business is taking is also really exciting. It always feels like we are working towards something greater and I can’t wait to see what the future holds here!
Where do you want to be in a few years time?
I'd like to progress to the role of Business Development Manager, meeting higher targets and getting passed more opportunities to demonstrate our products. With everything that’s going on at Cloud IQ at the moment, the future looks promising and I’m looking forward to continuing to be a part of it.
